Medicus ruth downie12/16/2023 When I’m not researching or writing the Ruso novels, I spend the occasional joyous week grovelling in mud with an archaeological trowel, because Roman Britain is still there. We have two grown-up sons, two three two cats at the last count, and an unknown number of badgers who live down a dark hole in the garden. I’ve been accompanied throughout this impossible mission by a patient husband. All I had to do was find out everything there was to know about Roman Britain, invent things to fill the gaps, and work out how to put it all together in a novel… Sheltering from the rain in a museum, I read, “Roman soldiers were allowed to have relationships with local women, but they were not allowed to marry them.” Obviously, here was a terrific story waiting to be told. I wasn’t looking for them: we only went to Hadrian’s Wall because we thought our children should do something educational on holiday. Finally I took the plunge and started working on my own material.Īnd then came the Romans. As secretaries were replaced with computers, and my higher-flying contemporaries discovered to their horror that they were expected to type their own letters, there were fewer and fewer outlets for creativity in the office. Ruth is the author of nine mysteries featuring Roman Army medic Gaius Petreius Ruso and his British partner Tilla. Ruth Downie Medicus Series Ebook Bundle: An Eight Book Bundle Kindle Edition by Ruth Downie (Author) Format: Kindle Edition 13 ratings Collects books from: The Medicus See all formats and editions Kindle 91. Some of my earliest ventures into creative writing were attempts to type up my indecipherable shorthand in such a way that the boss wouldn’t realise I was making it up. I fear this will upset some readers, but I left university with an English degree and a plan to get married and live happily ever after. Some people know from a very early age that they are going to be writers: I wasn’t one of them. Roman and Greek doctors were very wise about many things but they were also known to prescribe donkey dung and boiled cockroaches.I was lucky enough to be born in the West Country, in beautiful North Devon. Absolutely none of the medical advice in the Ruso books should be followed. The series is wearing well, more solid than mercurial. Yet, MEMENTO MORI is the eighth in the series already. She is not the same person as the RS Downie who writes real medical textbooks. As a long-time fan of Steven Saylor and Lindsey Davis, Ruth Downie's Medicus series still seems like the newcomer to the world of mysteries set in Ancient Rome. Ruth lives in North Devon with a husband, a fine view and too many cats. IN 2019 she was a contributor to 'RUBICON', the Historical Novel Society's collection of Roman-era short stories. 2017 saw the publication of 'THE BEAR AND THE WOLF', a short story of love and danger on Rome's northern border, written with SJA Turney. In 2015 Ruth helped to put together 'A YEAR OF RAVENS: a novel of Boudica's rebellion' with co-conspirators Stephanie Drey, E Knight, Kate Quinn, Vicky Alvear Shecter, SJA Turney and Russell Whitfield. He has vast debts, a slave girl who is much more trouble than she. Formerly published as RUSO AND THE DISAPPEARING DANCING GIRLS Praise for Ruth Downie: 'a wonderful and well-written story' - Ben Kane, author of the Eagles, Hannibal. The Gods are not smiling on army doctor Gaius Petreius Ruso in his new posting in Britannia. Perfect for fans of Lindsey Davis and Steven Saylor. SEMPER FIDELIS (at last, only one title!) With a gift for comic timing and historic detail, Ruth Downie has conjured an ancient world as raucous and real as our own. PERSONA NON GRATA ('Ruso and the Root of All Evils')ĬAVEAT EMPTOR ('Ruso and the River of Darkness') TERRA INCOGNITA ('Ruso and the Demented Doctor') MEDICUS (the first story, AKA 'Medicus/Ruso and the Disappearing Dancing Girls') The latest book is a novella, PRIMA FACIE, published in July 2019. In the meantime she is also the New York Times bestselling author of a mystery series featuring Roman legionary doctor Gaius Petreius Ruso and his British partner, Tilla. Ruth (RS) Downie left university with an English degree and a plan to get married and live happily ever after.
